FAMILY CAREGIVER JOB DESCRIPTION

A Family Caregiver assists relatives who are unable to complete basic tasks for themselves. All tasks—all day—everyday—and night.

The Caregiver is responsible for monitoring, administering, policing, preparing, ALL THINGS associated with patients’ life—daily and nightly.

CAREGIVER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Caregivers help clients with everyday activities. Other essential duties and responsibilities include:

Offering companionship and emotional support
Taking clients to their medical appointments, and other important places
Managing medication
Following the prescribed medical plan
Grocery Shopping
Running Errands
Preparing meals
All Household chores including doing the laundry
Providing bathing and dressing assistance as needed
Aiding in Personal Care
Keeping proper care records
Financial Administration
Appointment scheduling and maintaining weekly calendar
Encouraging socialization and participation in community activities in order to get the patient out of the house
Communicating with medical professionals about the patient care plan (Patient Advocate)
Assistance with mobility
Constant SPILL, DROP, & FALL PATROL in order to maintain a safe and comfortable home environment
EVERYHING AND ANYTHING ELSE THAT YOU CAN POSSIBLY THINK OF

CAREGIVER SKILLS:

An unlimited amount of patience
Highly Organized
Ability to multi-task
Mental health training to recognize when you’ve reached your “Wits-End”
First aid and CPR
Cooking, Cleaning
Ability to un-clog the toilet while “having to go”
Physical Stamina
Able to perform all tasks with little to no sleep
The ability to un-clog the toilet after 1-2 glasses of wine
Sound Mind or at least not obviously crazy
A Highly developed sense of Humor
FAITH
Minimum Education requirement
MUST BE WILLING TO ABANDON CURRENT LIFE
A CAREGIVER’S CONSCIENCE

CAREGIVER SALARY EXPECTATIONS

The Un-Paid Caregiver (Usually a Relative—Child, Spouse, Sibling) can typically expect NOT to receive any monetary compensation.
No Cash, Direct Deposits, Crypto, Prepaid Visa or Starbucks Gift Cards will be given to the Family Caregiver
No Currency, negotiable metals or highly valued street drugs will be received for services rendered
Non-monetary payments may include
- Gratitude of Siblings and/or Family Members
- Envy of other Elderly people whose Children have other plans
- Praise & Hugs from Strangers
- A better chance at your place in Heaven
- Future memories which you may refer to as “good times”

CAREGIVER EDUCATION & TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

Caregivers learn many skills through on-the-job training
There is no official Caregiver license or certification

CAREGIVER EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Family Members obtaining the services of a Relative as Un-Paid Caregiver really cannot mandate any specific requirements or experience. Be Thankful that the Relative has stepped up to tackle this difficult position.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS REGARDING CAREGIVING

WHAT SETTINGS DO CAREGIVERS TYPICALLY WORK IN?

A family member who is acting as a Caregiver is normally doing so to allow the patient to remain in their home.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CAREGIVER AND A CARETAKER?

A Caregiver is a paid employee or an unpaid Family Member who looks after a person to provide them with basic care and assistance.
A Caretaker is a person who looks after a home, person, or animals while the primary Caregiver or homeowner is away.

WHO DOES THE CAREGIVER REPORT TO?

A Family Caregiver may report to other family members, who should be careful not to pass judgement on the Care they are NOT providing.
In my case, I report to my Mom—the person requiring Caregiving.
