A CAREGIVING LOVE STORY

A CAREGIVING LOVE STORY

Rosalynn Carter, a woman whose name was synonymous with Caregiving “died peacefully with her family by her side,” on Sunday, November 19, 2023.  The Carter Center said that she died Sunday, after living with dementia and suffering many months of declining health. She was 96.

Her thoughts regarding Caregiving will literally go down in history.  She is famously quoted in saying, There are only four kinds of people in this world: those who have been caregivers; those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers,”

She had been diagnosed with dementia in 2023 after having been her husband’s Caregiver for a number of years. Upon her passing, the former President said, “As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me.”

As is a common occurrence in the world of Caregiving, the Former First Lady preceded her Husband, President Jimmy Carter in death.  President Carter opted for Home Hospice care in February of 2023.  As of this writing the 39th President of the United States remains at home with his Family.

The Caregiver died before the patient.

Since I’ve become my Mother’s Caregiver, I have a newfound respect, appreciation and admiration for the Former First Lady and all that she accomplished.

As a First Lady her cause–the arena in which she hoped to make a difference was Caregiving and Mental Health.  As the world mourns her passing, this Caregiver would like to honor her, saying, “Thank you for your service. You were right!”
